Rosacea is a chronic skin disorder characterized by facial flushing, persistent erythema (redness), telangiectasia (visible broken capillaries), and inflammatory papules (bumps) and pustules (blemishes) affecting the central face. It is a chronic condition which can relapse and also spontaneously clear so it requires long term treatment.
Rosacea tends to be genetic and is more common in women than men. However, males may have more severe symptoms of the disorder, such as large bulbous noses with extreme redness and bumps. Rosacea is categorized into four stages, with the first stage being skin flushing and the final stage being a condition that is similar to severe acne; swelling, redness, infected areas, bumps and broken blood vessels.
Persons with rosacea have an increased amount of the demodex mite in their follicles and are sensitive to the waste that the mite produces. This is one cause of the disorder. Other factors that irritate the condition may include spicy foods, abuse of alcohol, certain trigger foods and over exposure to UV radiation (sun).
There is no cure at this time for rosacea. However, there are strategies for alleviating the symptoms and reversing some of the damage caused by it. The regular use of professional products such as the Hexacleanse cleanser with hexadamine from Rejudicare will reduce redness, help to control mites and soothe the skin. In addition, using a high quality mineral sunblock such as Tizo will help to avoid further damage from the sun and protect the skin. Using Jane Iredale mineral makeup is another good strategy for protection of the skin from the harmful UV rays of the sun.
